Understand the numbers well enough to compare upgrades without treating every displayed value as directly equivalent.

Short answer: Sharpness affects melee effectiveness, affinity is critical-hit chance rather than damage by itself, and element or status value only matters when the weapon, hit frequency, and monster matchup can use it.

Sharpness is both damage and reliability

For melee weapons, sharpness is a resource that can affect effective damage and whether attacks rebound on resistant parts. Plan sharpening around travel, knockdowns, or safe disengagement instead of waiting until the weapon becomes unreliable.

Affinity in plain language

Affinity represents the chance for attacks to produce critical outcomes under the current rules. Raising affinity and improving critical damage are separate choices; read each skill's exact in-game description and conditions before combining them.

Element versus raw damage

Element is matchup-dependent and often benefits from frequent connection, but weapon behavior and attack selection matter. Do not compare the displayed element number across weapon types as if every hit applies it identically.

Raw-focused progression is easier to maintain because it asks for fewer matchup-specific weapons. Elemental sets become more attractive when you know the target and can support multiple branches.

Status is not element

Poison, paralysis, sleep, and other statuses build toward an effect rather than adding the same direct damage behavior as an element. Repeated triggers generally become harder to reach, so evaluate a status by the openings or utility it creates for the whole hunt.

Compare upgrades with a hunt-use worksheet

Record the attacks you actually use, the parts you can reliably reach, how often sharpness interrupts pressure, and whether an affinity or elemental condition remains active in that matchup. These observations matter more than comparing one number in isolation.

When two choices are close, run the same familiar hunt with the same preparation and focus on consistency rather than one best clear. A dependable option that preserves contact and needs fewer resets may outperform a larger theoretical value.

Practical scenarios

The larger displayed number performs worse

Situation: A weapon upgrade looks stronger but loses sharpness or matchup value.

Better response: Compare the complete attack plan, sharpness uptime, affinity conditions, element, and reachable hit zones rather than one stat.

An elemental set is expensive

Situation: Progression materials cannot support several branches.

Better response: Maintain a dependable general weapon first, then add matchup sets for targets hunted repeatedly.

A conditional bonus rarely activates

Situation: The status screen looks stronger, but the required condition is absent during most real openings.

Better response: Measure the condition's actual uptime on a familiar hunt and compare the complete loop with a more dependable alternative.
